The Minister's Black Veil
On a Sunday morning the Reverend Mr Hooper walks to the Milford meeting-house with a strip of black crape hanging over his face, and preaches on secret sin to a congregation that cannot meet his eye. He will not explain the veil, not to the parish and not to the fiancée who begs him once to lift it, and he wears it through every wedding, funeral and sickbed after. A parable of concealment that its own author subtitled a parable.
