The Marble Faun

Nathaniel Hawthorne · 1860 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

Three artists in Rome - a copyist, a sculptor and a dark-eyed painter with a past she will not discuss - befriend a young Italian count who is the living double of the faun of Praxiteles. A model who has been shadowing the painter meets the four of them one night on the Tarpeian Rock, and afterwards the count's animal ease deserts him. Hawthorne's last finished book made the fortunate fall a subject for American fiction.
