Young Goodman Brown
A young Puritan leaves his wife Faith at dusk and keeps an appointment in the forest outside Salem village, where the traveler waiting for him carries a staff shaped like a serpent. Deeper in the woods he begins to recognize the voices at the gathering: the minister, the deacon, the woman who taught him his catechism. Hawthorne's tightest allegory, and the story American gothic has been rewriting ever since.
