The Temptation of Saint Anthony

Gustave Flaubert · 1874 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A hermit alone outside his hut in the Egyptian desert is visited across one night by everything he has renounced — gluttony, wealth, the Queen of Sheba, his former disciple, and at last the whole procession of heresies and dead gods. Each apparition argues its case and dissolves into the next, until matter itself begins to speak. Flaubert began it after seeing a Brueghel treatment of the subject in Genoa, worked from the ancient Life of Anthony, and rewrote it across twenty-five years.
