The Man Who Was Thursday
A poet recruited into a plain-clothes police branch against anarchism argues his way into a cellar election and comes out on the Central Council of Europe, whose seven members are named for the days of the week. The men he was set against begin, one at a time, to look less like anarchists than like himself, which leaves the enormous laughing president who appointed the lot of them harder to account for rather than easier. Chesterton subtitled it a nightmare and said afterwards that it described the doubts of a young man who had already come out the far side of pessimism.
