The Shadow
A learned man from the cold north takes lodgings in a hot country and, watching the balcony opposite, jokes to his shadow that it should go across and look inside. It does, and does not come back; years later a thin, elegant gentleman calls on him and explains what he has become and what he saw in there. Andersen took Chamisso's man without a shadow and reversed the loss into something much colder.
