The Servant
An indolent young aristocrat takes a Chelsea townhouse and hires the impeccable manservant Barrett, who fills it with comforts, then with his supposed sister, then with himself, until it is no longer clear who serves whom. Losey's camera prowls the staircase and distorting mirrors as the house closes like a trap. Harold Pinter's first screenplay for Losey, from Robin Maugham's 1948 novella (not in this archive), turned a class parable into a study in willing degradation.
