The Go-Between
In the blazing Norfolk summer of 1900, a twelve-year-old guest at a great house carries letters between his friend's engaged sister and a tenant farmer, understanding just enough to be destroyed by what he transmits. Flashes of an old man's grey errand in the present cut into the golden summer, Pinter's device for Hartley's frame. The second Losey–Pinter collaboration, from L. P. Hartley's 1953 novel, it took the Palme d'Or and fixed 'The past is a foreign country' in the language.
