The House of the Spirits
Clara del Valle, who moves objects without touching them and writes down what happens before it has happened, marries the landowner Esteban Trueba and fills his corner house in the capital with spirits, poets, mediums and daughters. Out at Tres Marías he rules his tenants as absolutely as he fails to rule his family, and three generations later the country his class ran is taken over by the army. Allende began the book as a letter to her dying grandfather while exiled in Caracas, and it carried Latin American magical realism to a worldwide readership under a woman's name.
