Texaco
An urban planner arrives at Texaco, a quarter of crate-wood and asbestos houses raised on waste ground beside an oil depot at the edge of Fort-de-France, carrying an order to clear it. Marie-Sophie Laborieux, who founded the place, answers him by starting at the beginning: her father Esternome born into slavery on a plantation, freed, drawn toward the City, and the succession of settlements the poor built and lost on the way to this one. Chamoiseau wrote it in a French shot through with Creole, and it is the central achievement of the créolité movement.
