The Stories of Eva Luna

Isabel Allende · 1989 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A woman who has spent her life earning shelter with stories is asked by her lover for one that nobody has heard before, and supplies twenty-three: a seller of words in a market square, a girl kept for years in a cellar by a dictator's police, a schoolmistress who buries a man alive at his own request. Each is complete in itself, and each returns to the same room, where the telling is a transaction between two particular people. The frame is openly Scheherazade's, and the collection is generally held to be Allende's short fiction at its strongest.
