Diana

Jorge de Montemayor · 1559 CE · Novel · Spanish · Renaissance

Shepherds gather in a valley in León around Sireno, who has come home from a season away to find the woman he left married to someone else, and each new arrival brings another love mislaid or misdirected. A wise woman keeps a palace where a cup of water can redirect an affection outright, and one of the company is a Spanish lady travelling as a page in the service of the man who abandoned her. Montemayor, a Portuguese musician writing in Castilian, set the Iberian pastoral fashion here and left threads deliberately loose for the continuations that duly came.
