Daphnis and Chloe

Longus · c. 200 CE · Novel · Greek · Classical

A goatherd and a shepherdess on Lesbos, each exposed as an infant and raised by the farmers who found them, fall in love before either understands what is happening and try to work it out by watching the animals. Their year turns with the seasons and is broken open by pirates, raiders from Methymna, an aggressive town suitor and a bored city woman who offers instruction. The only pastoral among the Greek romances, and the ancestor of every later story of two children growing into desire inside a landscape.
