La Galatea
Shepherds on the banks of the Tagus love women who do not love them back, break off to sing eclogues at one another, and take in strangers arriving with worse troubles than their own. Cervantes's first book follows the fashion Montemayor's Diana had set a generation earlier, and he went on promising a second part until the week he died. The priest spares it during the book-burning in Don Quixote, on the grounds that its author is a better friend of his than of poetry.
