Chitra

Rabindranath Tagore · 1913 CE · Play · Indian · Modernist

Raised as a son and trained to arms, the princess of Manipur meets Arjuna in the forest, is refused as a woman, and asks the god of love for a single year of borrowed beauty. She gets it, and spends the year being adored as someone who is not herself while the man she wants praises a face she did not earn. A lyrical drama on an episode from the Mahabharata, written in Bengali and translated by Tagore himself for the London stage.
