The Hungry Stones
Two travellers held up at a railway junction are buttonholed by a stranger with a theory, and a story about the marble palace on the Susta where he was once posted to collect cotton duties. Alone in its halls after dark he begins to hear anklets and running water, and to live a second life among Persian slave girls that daylight cannot quite dispel. The frame leaves belief unsettled, the device Tagore used throughout his ghost stories to keep the supernatural at arm's length.
