Rebecca

Daphne du Maurier · 1938 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

A young paid companion marries a widowed English landowner after a fortnight in Monte Carlo and arrives at his Cornish estate to find the household still ordered by his first wife's tastes. The housekeeper keeps the dead woman's rooms exactly as they were, and the narrator, who is never named, measures herself against a rival she has never met. Du Maurier's study of a marriage overshadowed by a predecessor has never been out of print and set the pattern for twentieth-century Gothic suspense.
