The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Charles Dickens · 1870 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

In a cathedral town where the crypt and the quicklime are part of ordinary business, the choirmaster keeps a respectable surface over an opium habit and a concealed passion for his nephew's intended. The engagement is broken off amicably, a hot-tempered newcomer from Ceylon quarrels with the nephew in public, and on Christmas Eve, after a storm, the young man is not seen again. Dickens died with six of the twelve planned numbers written, leaving the only unfinished major work in his output and a solution that has been argued over ever since.
