The New York Trilogy
Three cases in which the detection turns inward: a mystery writer takes a telephone call meant for a private investigator named Paul Auster and accepts the job; a man called Blue is hired to watch a man called Black from a room across the street; a writer is asked to edit the papers of a childhood friend who has disappeared. Rooms, notebooks and stakeouts multiply until keeping the record costs more than the case is worth. Auster turns the ratiocinative form Poe invented back on the man holding the pen, with a long argument about the authorship of Don Quixote planted in the middle of it.
