The Music of Chance

Paul Auster · 1990 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

An ex-fireman with an inheritance drives the country at random until the money runs low, then stakes what is left on a card game arranged by a young gambler he picks up beside the road. The two lose to a pair of soft-spoken lottery winners and sign on to work the debt off building a wall in a Pennsylvania meadow out of the stones of a shipped-in Irish castle. What began as a wager hardens by degrees into a term of labour with its own accounts and its own guard.
