One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Ken Kesey · 1962 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Chief Bromden has swept the ward for years pretending to be deaf and dumb, which is how he hears everything the staff say in front of him. Randle McMurphy arrives from a prison work farm expecting an easy stretch and starts running card games, betting pools and a standing war of nerves against Nurse Ratched. Kesey wrote it out of night shifts on a psychiatric ward and volunteer drug trials, and gave the counterculture its parable of the institution.
