Mario and the Magician

Thomas Mann · 1930 CE · Short Story · German · Modernist

A German family's summer at an Italian resort sours by degrees, from a fine over a bathing costume to a hotel that shifts them for a child's cough, and ends at an evening performance by a travelling hypnotist. The man is deformed, cruel and very good indeed at what he does, and the holidaymakers keep finding reasons to stay in their seats. Written as Mussolini consolidated, and read since as Mann's clearest statement about crowds.
