A Tempest
On the island the exiled duke is a colonist administering property, Ariel a mulatto who believes in patience and negotiation, and Caliban a Black slave who opens by refusing the name he was given. The old plot of shipwreck, courtship and pardon still runs, but every courtesy in it now reads as an instrument of rule. Césaire subtitled his rewriting an adaptation for a Black theatre and wrote it for Jean-Marie Serreau's company.
