The Miraculous Weapons

Aimé Césaire · 1946 CE · Poem · Caribbean · Contemporary

Volcanic, image-crowded pieces composed in Martinique under the Vichy administration, where surrealist obscurity worked as a practical disguise from the censor. At the centre sits a dramatic sequence in which an imprisoned rebel slave leader is pressed by his captors, and then by his own mother, to repent the rising he led. André Breton's championing of Césaire dates from these years and carried Négritude into the Paris avant-garde.
