Black Hosts
Poems for the Senegalese riflemen conscripted into French uniform, written partly inside the camps where Senghor spent two years as a prisoner of war after the fall of France. They count the dead of two wars, name the men shot at Thiaroye in 1944 for asking after their back pay, and set a prayer of peace against a demand for reckoning. Dedicated to the tirailleurs and held back until the Liberation, it is the harshest book he published.
