Black Woman

Léopold Sédar Senghor · 1945 CE · Poem · West African · Contemporary

A woman is addressed naked, and in the same breath the savanna under a noon sun, ripe fruit, black wine, the wind on a horseman's flank, until the person and the continent can no longer be told apart. The praise moves on the pattern of a Serer oral eulogy, in long unrhymed versets pitched for a speaking voice over the kora. Senghor's most anthologised piece, and the one most argued over for turning the Black woman into a landscape.
