Shadow Songs
Poems written in Paris through the 1930s by a Serer schoolmaster's son from the Sine delta, turning back on Joal, the tamarind in the ancestral compound, the night singers and the dead who are held to be not absent. Against that stand the grey streets of the exile's Europe and a borrowed language the poet had taken as far as the agrégation. Senghor's first collection, and the point at which Négritude acquired a lyric register beside Césaire's polemical one, with koras and balafong named at the head of poems as instruction rather than ornament.
