The Star-Apple Kingdom
Shabine, a sailor of mixed blood with no nation but the sea and Dutch, English and African in his blood, signs onto a schooner out of Trinidad and narrates his own leaving in Creole hexameters. The title poem sets a Jamaican prime minister awake at night among the portraits of the plantation past he has inherited along with the office. The volume that gave Caribbean poetry its most quoted speaking voice.
