The Mimic Men
V. S. Naipaul · 1967 CE · Novel · Caribbean · Contemporary
In a London suburban hotel a forty-year-old exile from the invented Caribbean island of Isabella writes the memoir of how he became a minister and then stopped being one. He moves without order between a boyhood among borrowed names, a student marriage in England, and a politics everyone involved knows to be a performance. The title gave critics their word for colonial mimicry.
