Notebook of a Return to the Native Land
A voice returning in imagination to Martinique finds the island town at daybreak, its hunger and its sores and its borrowed manners, and refuses to look away from any of it. What begins in self-disgust widens into the whole history of the crossing and the plantation, then turns to claim that inheritance rather than escape it. Begun in the late 1930s and revised for two decades, it is the founding statement of Négritude and coined the word.
