Solar Throat Slashed

Aimé Césaire · 1948 CE · Poem · Caribbean · Contemporary

The most thoroughly surrealist of Césaire's collections, seventy-odd pieces built out of Caribbean volcanoes, rank vegetation and mutilated bodies rather than out of argument, with the colonised subject reassembled from the wreckage. The title lifts the closing line of Apollinaire's Zone and turns a sunrise image into a wound. Césaire later cut and rewrote so much of the book that the two versions are now read as separate works.
