The Kingdom of This World
Ti Noël, a slave on a plantation outside Cap-Français, watches the one-armed Mackandal turn poisoner and then, according to everyone standing in the square, into animals. Four decades carry him through the fall of the French colony and into the reign of Henri Christophe, who drives black labor up a mountain to build a citadel against an invasion that never comes. Carpentier's prologue coined lo real maravilloso and set the terms Latin American fiction argued over for the next thirty years.
