Ecue-Yamba-O
Menegildo Cue grows up in the cane on a foreign-owned sugar estate in eastern Cuba, learning the harvest, the drums and the rites of the Abakua societies before trouble carries him to Havana. American capital, machinery and the police press on a life still ordered by ritual. Carpentier drafted it in a Havana jail in 1927 and later disowned it as picturesque, though it was the first Cuban novel to treat Afro-Cuban belief as a serious subject.
