Concierto Barroco

Alejo Carpentier · 1974 CE · Novel · Caribbean · Contemporary

A Mexican silver heir sails for Europe with a Cuban servant named Filomeno and reaches Venice at carnival, where the pair fall in with Vivaldi, Scarlatti and Handel and spend a night improvising in a convent orphanage. Out of that night comes an opera about Montezuma in which the New World is costumed to Italian taste, and its owner watches his own conquest played as spectacle. Carpentier, a trained musicologist, built the hundred pages as variations rather than plot.
