Mason & Dixon
An astronomer and a surveyor are sent by the Royal Society to observe the transit of Venus from the Cape, then to cut a boundary four degrees west through the American colonies, their travels retold years afterwards by a clergyman entertaining his relatives over Christmas. Talking dogs, a mechanical duck, Jesuit conspiracies and a slowly gathering unease about what a straight line does to a continent and the people already living across it. Written throughout in a pastiche of eighteenth-century prose, capitals and all.
