Micromégas

Voltaire · 1752 CE · Short Story · French · Enlightenment

An inhabitant of a planet circling Sirius, eight leagues tall and banished from court for a book about insects, tours the solar system in company with a Saturnian a mere thousand fathoms high. On Earth the two eventually make out a shipload of philosophers returning across the Baltic, rig a speaking trumpet from a clipped fingernail, and find the creatures certain of everything and agreed on nothing. Voltaire's scale joke about human self-importance, learned from the Englishman he had met in London.
