Zadig
A young Babylonian of exemplary good sense loses a fiancée, a wife, his freedom and his standing in quick succession, reconstructs a queen's lost dog and a king's lost horse from their tracks alone, and is fined and nearly executed for the feat. Sold into slavery, raised to first minister, hunted across Arabia and Egypt, he keeps setting the doctrine of a governed universe against what actually happens to him. One of the oriental tales Voltaire wrote inside the vogue that Galland's translation of the Arabian nights had created in France.
