Chronicle in Stone
A boy watches his stone-built city on the mountainside change hands between Italians, Greeks and Germans in the space of a few seasons, and takes it in alongside Macbeth, the old women's spells and the rumour of a hermaphrodite two doors along. An aerodrome appears and is bombed, neighbours are hanged, the cisterns fill and empty. Kadare grew up in Gjirokastër, as did Enver Hoxha, and this is the closest his work comes to memoir.
