The General of the Dead Army
Twenty years after the war an Italian general is sent into Albania with a priest, a map of graves and a ledger of heights and dental records, to dig up his country's dead and carry them home. The rain does not stop, the villagers watch, and a German colonel is working the next valley on the same errand. Kadare wrote it at twenty-seven, and its translation into French made his name abroad while he stayed in Hoxha's Albania.
