The Three-Arched Bridge
In 1377 a monk sets down what he has watched: a foreign consortium raising a stone bridge over a river the raft-ferry company owns, the works undone by sabotage every night, and the masons' answer to it. Ottoman envoys ride past on their way north while the local lords take sides. Kadare built the book on the Balkan immurement ballad of the wife walled into the masonry, a legend the peninsula carries in dozens of versions.
