The File on H.
Two Homeric scholars from New York reach the Albanian highlands in the 1930s carrying a tape recorder, meaning to settle whether the epics were composed orally by recording the last surviving rhapsodes. The provincial governor puts a spy on them whose reports rewrite what they are doing, and the governor's wife reads those reports as romance. Kadare took the premise from Milman Parry and Albert Lord, who did this fieldwork in Yugoslavia.
