Broken April
Having shot the man who shot his brother, a young highlander is granted a thirty-day truce under the mountain code before his own turn comes round, and walks north to pay the blood tax at the castle that administers the feud. A writer has brought his bride up to the same plateau to admire that code as literature. Kadare's subject is the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, the customary law that governed northern Albania into the twentieth century.
