Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Gabriel García Márquez · 1981 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Twenty-seven years on, a narrator comes home to reconstruct the morning the Vicario twins stood outside the milk shop with pig knives, telling every passer-by exactly what they meant to do, so that half the town knew and none of it moved. A bride had been returned to her family the night before, and a name given up under questioning. The killing is announced in the first line; the suspense lies in the mechanism.
