No One Writes to the Colonel

Gabriel García Márquez · 1961 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Every Friday an old veteran puts on his one suit and walks to the harbour to meet the mail launch, waiting on a pension promised him fifty-six years earlier for a war nobody now remembers. At home his asthmatic wife counts what is left to sell, while the fighting cock their murdered son left behind eats better than either of them. Written in Paris on borrowed money, it is the leanest thing he ever produced.
