The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World

Gabriel García Márquez · 1968 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A drowned man washes up on a barren cape, and as the women of the fishing village scrape off the crust of coral and weed they find him taller, heavier and better made than any man alive, so they name him Esteban and sew him clothes out of sails. The men come back with word that he belongs to no village along the coast. The place then starts measuring its doors, its flowers and its lives against him.
