The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira

Gabriel García Márquez · 1972 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A girl who lets the desert wind knock a candle into her grandmother's mansion is told the fire cost eight hundred thousand pesos and must be worked off with her body, and the two set out across the Guajira with a tent, a photographer and a queue of men that runs out of sight. The grandmother talks in her sleep of smugglers and drinks poison like water. Domestic cruelty told in the voice of a fairy tale.
