The Tale of Chunhyang
The daughter of a retired courtesan and the son of the Namwon magistrate marry in secret on a spring afternoon, and then his father is promoted to the capital and takes him along. The magistrate who replaces him demands that she attend at his table as her mother once attended his predecessors; she answers that she is a wife, and he has her flogged and thrown into the town prison to think it over. Sung as pansori long before anyone wrote it down, and by a wide margin the most retold story in Korea.
