The Black Tulip

Alexandre Dumas · 1850 CE · Novel · French · Romantic

The lynching of the de Witt brothers by a Hague mob opens on a Holland where tulip growing is a national mania and a hundred thousand guilders wait for the first black bloom. Cornelius van Baerle, godson of one of the murdered men, is denounced by an envious neighbour and taken from his bulbs to a fortress cell. The jailer's daughter Rosa learns to read from him and takes charge of what he could not carry in with him.
