If Beale Street Could Talk

James Baldwin · 1974 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Tish Rivers is nineteen and pregnant, and says so to Fonny through the glass at the Tombs before she says it to anyone else; he is held on the word of a woman who has since left for Puerto Rico and of a police officer he once humiliated. The two families take the news very differently, and the money for lawyers and investigators has to be found somewhere in Harlem. Baldwin's fifth novel, carried throughout in Tish's voice.
