Giovanni's Room
James Baldwin · 1956 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary
David, an American loose in Paris while his fiancee travels in Spain, drinks in a bar off the boulevard and goes home with Giovanni the barman to a maid's room whose window is papered over against the light. The affair runs through a winter of no money and no plan, and David keeps a ticket back to a life that room cannot survive. Baldwin's second novel has no Black characters; his publisher advised him to burn it, and it is now a founding text of gay literature.
